Parklets – Transforming Public Spaces
What are Parklets? Parklets are public seating areas converted from parking spaces to be enjoyed by the community to eat, seat, relax and most imperative to enjoy the city life. Parklets most often are the resultant product of a partnership between the city and local businesses, residents, or neighborhood associations.
Most parklets are landscaped with seating, greenery, and/or bike racks and accommodate unmet demand for public space on thriving neighborhood retail streets or commercial areas whilst adding vibrancy to the neighborhood.
One could consider Parklets as areas where to stop and rest while walking. This could be regarded as more walking distance can be covered for the impaired mobility. “Evidence in the DfT document Inclusive Mobility (2002) that 50m is the maximum distance many mobility impaired people can walk before they need to rest, so having more rest points on residential streets (via parklets) should lead to more people being able to walk longer distances.” https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/
In a way, the introduction of Parklets in communities is a way of boosting the evening economy in certain places whilst creating a greener public space whilst enjoying a free traffic environment.
A case study in 2015 – The Case for Parklets: Measuring the Impact on Sidewalk Vitality and Neighborhood Businesses statistics show that Parklets can attract an enormous number of 150 unique users in a 240 square feet that otherwise would have been used by one to two parked cars, it also states that with the introduction of parklets a boost in sales of 20% for the nearby businesses was also seen.
